Breast Reconstruction for Post-Mastectomy Repair

What is Breast Reconstruction Surgery?

Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to help women heal and restore their breasts after a mastectomy or double mastectomy procedure. The goal of the surgery is to help women achieve their ideal breasts, as our plastic surgeons can carefully help achieve your goals based on your exact needs and anatomy. Our breast reconstruction surgery is performed with the highest care in mind; whether you’ve already undergone a mastectomy or are planning on one, we’ll be there with you every step of the way.

How Does It Work?

Breast reconstruction surgery can be performed using your own tissue or using an implant, known as implant-based reconstruction. Depending on the size of your breasts, your ideal breast size and body habitus, our plastic surgeons will help you navigate the decision-making process. They work in a multidisciplinary team along with breast surgeons, oncologists and radiation oncologists to help you achieve the best health and reconstructive outcome possible.

Breast reconstruction can be performed immediately at the time of mastectomy or delayed at another date. Many women who have already had breast reconstruction are unhappy with their cosmetic outcome or have implant-related problems like bottoming out, implant malposition or just aren’t happy with how things look. Sometimes, women need a procedure on their non-cancer breast to achieve symmetry. Women who had a lumpectomy sometimes have a contour irregularity and may benefit from surgery.

Usually, the surgery for breast reconstruction is performed under general anesthesia.

Am I a Good Candidate For Breast Reconstruction?

You’re a good candidate for breast reconstruction surgery if you’ve had or are planning to have a mastectomy or plan to have a lumpectomy as a part of oncoplastic breast surgery. Your plastic surgeons will work with your team of cancer doctors to help you achieve your goals. If you opt for the procedure that involves reconstruction via tissue and fat, you’ll need to have enough body fat to support the procedure. The best candidates are healthy nonsmoking individuals with realistic expectations for their procedure.

Consultations Are Available Now

Take the first step. Get your questions answered and find out which treatment option is best for you by meeting with one of our knowledgeable medical staff at South Coast Plastic Surgery for an in-person consultation.

What Results Will I See?*

Results are immediately noticeable, even underneath your surgical compression garments. Patients report feeling a sense of relief and “restored femininity”, as they’re able to enjoy having normal breasts again. Due to minor swelling and bruising, your body will need time to heal.

What is the Recovery Like?*

Recovery for this procedure can be somewhat intensive, which is why it often involves a staged approach. How much time you need off from work after surgery depends on you, the nature of the surgery and how you do after surgery. Most women start feeling “back to normal” after about six to eight weeks; additionally, this is when patients can start enjoying physical intimacy again. Strenuous exercise is not recommended for the first two months of post-reconstruction recovery.
